LAT Nitrogen and Hynamics develop the ABC Ottmarsheim project: France's first low-carbon ammonia and fertiliser production project
Challenges & Perspectives
LAT Nitrogen and Hynamics are working in partnership to develop a way of decarbonising the ammonia reforming process by replacing the hydrogen currently produced by steam reforming of methane with low-carbon hydrogen. The ABC OTTMARSHEIM project involves the production of around 7,000 tonnes of hydrogen a year by electrolysis of water at the Ottmarsheim site, near Mulhouse, enabling 15% of the site's total requirements to be substituted.
The electrolyser will be powered by France's low-carbon electricity mix, and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by almost 50,000 tonnes a year. The ammonia produced by the Ottmarsheim site is mainly used in the production of fertilisers. This project will be a pioneering ammonia project.
