Hynamics, a leading player in the production of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, is proud to announce that the European Commission has officially approved, under EU state aid rules, €144 million in French funding to support its ABC Ottmarsheim project. This strategic funding will accelerate the production of carbon-free hydrogen for the fertiliser sector, marking a key milestone in Europe’s energy transition.

The ABC Ottmarsheim project involves the installation and operation of a 50 MW renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production unit. This state-of-the-art facility will be located in the Ottmarsheim-Chalampé industrial zone in France (Haut-Rhin) on the site of LAT Nitrogen, a producer of fertilisers and industrial chemicals, which is strongly committed to reducing its emissions by producing low-carbon ammonia.

A significant environmental impact for the industry

This initiative will make a decisive contribution to the decarbonisation of the ammonia production process. By replacing up to 15% of the hydrogen currently produced from fossil fuels with renewable, low-carbon hydrogen, the ABC Ottmarsheim project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70% compared to traditional methods.

6,600 tonnes of low-carbon, renewable hydrogen produced by a 50 MW electrolyser will enable the annual production of 36,000 tonnes of carbon-free ammonia.

This will prevent more than 46,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year, representing a giant leap towards a more sustainable future.

State aid, in the form of a direct grant, will cover part of the necessary investment costs, including the construction of the electrolyser and associated infrastructure.

The culmination of a strong partnership between two industrial players

European recognition and strategic alignment

The European Commission’s approval underscores the importance of the ABC Ottmarsheim project. It has recognised that the French measure promotes the development of a strategic economic activity, essential to the energy transition and the EU’s climate objectives, notably the EU Hydrogen Strategy and the Renewable Energy Directive, which set ambitious targets for the incorporation of renewable hydrogen into industry.

This decision confirms Hynamics’ central role in building a robust carbon-free hydrogen economy in Europe, actively contributing to the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
