Dunkirk commits to sustainable mobility with SHYMED renewable hydrogen station

Challenges & Perspectives

The Société de Projet SHYMED (Solution HYdrogène pour la Mobilité Electrique du Dunkerquois), which brings together the Communauté Urbaine de Dunkerque, Hynamics - a subsidiary of the EDF group - and the Banque des Territoires, is moving ahead with the installation of a hydrogen production and distribution station using electrolysis. Located in Dunkirk, this 1.25 MW station will be capable of producing up to 540 kg of hydrogen per day, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by around 1,145 tonnes a year.

From 2025, this innovative initiative will ensure a continuous supply of low-carbon hydrogen for 10 buses and 3 refuse collection vehicles, reinforcing the Urban Community's commitment to greener mobility.

The project is part of a wider drive to create a local ecosystem dedicated to decarbonising heavy mobility. Located on a brownfield site in the Petite-Synthe industrial zone, the station will benefit from a strategic location, less than 2 km from the major European trunk roads A16 and N225/A25. This logistical choice will optimise the supply and distribution of hydrogen for heavy goods vehicles. The support of the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) and the European Union, via the ‘Connecting Europe Facility’ fund, testifies to the importance and ambition of this initiative.

What's more, all the electricity used to power the station will be of renewable origin, guaranteeing a sustainable approach that respects the environment. Construction of the project is currently 90% advanced, demonstrating the strong commitment of the partners, and in particular the EDF Group, which is heavily involved in the energy transition in the region. With SHYMED, Dunkirk is taking a decisive step towards decarbonised mobility, paving the way for the creation of a territorial ecosystem aimed at decarbonising heavy mobility.
